Chemistry

Dissolving chemicals - 25 May 2010

“This time”, said Daddy, “we are going to try to make some more of the things we made last week and we are going to use this white powder called sodium hydrogen sulphate to see if the blue crystal (copper carbonate) and brown powder (copper oxide) will get totally disintegrated.”

So then daddy and I put some sodium hydrogen sulphate in water so it dissolved. When we poured some on the copper carbonate,and before we even saw what happened it had gone away and when we poured some in the copper oxide, after five minutes it was all clear.

My first chemical reaction - 20 May 2010

Daddy and I decided to make a chemical reaction today that pretty much pleased me. We started with some: sodium carbonate and some copper sulphate. Then we mixed them together and it went totally blue. Then we separated it from the water and let it dry off for five minutes while I read my book. We had turned sodium carbonate and copper sulphate into: copper carbonate. Then we got the spirit burner and we turned that into copper oxide. It was like black dust. Interesting!

The story of me, Daddy and the chemistry set - 18 May 2010

Daddy was reading the safety rules for the chemistry set.

"Understand?"
"Yes."
"Let's try lighting the lighter with methylated spirit"

.... A few minutes later. Outside.

"Antonia, put out the candle with this test tube."
"I can't."
"Look, you do it like this."

And a few minutes later the candle was out. Back in the living room.

"Antonia, listen to me!"
"I am!"
"Good, now you are going to write on what you've just seen."

So I went and wrote a story.

Poeme - Les oiseaux

Les oiseaux peuvent voler en liberté,
Pour réussir des longues distances,
Le rouge-gorge va bagarrer,
Pour le territoire en ronces.

L’albatros avec ses ailes
Vole loin dessus la froide gèle,
Les bébés nés voulaient,
Du poisson frais à manger.

Les oiseaux qui pèchent volent dans l’eau,
Et trouvent des poissons delissio,
C’est temps pour aller. Les goélands
Dansent au soleil qui se couche en rond.

My compass

This is a magnet. I used it to make my compass.

I took a needle and rubbed it against
this red and blue thing! You put a piece of cork under the needle then put it on a plate and put water in the plate and....................................................YOU DID IT! The needle points to the north!

Common Toad

In the park there is a lake, in the lake there are a million frogs. Frogs everywhere and they're mating too!


A frog can stay under water for an incredibly long time. I wanted to catch one but I stayed there almost ten minutes!


In this froggy group the female is the biggest and the male is on her back! If I were a frog I would be glad that my back bones did not fall out!

The magic rug

I went to a museum. I went on a rug and it felt like I was in someone's mouth or gliding with the jellyfish. Sometimes, I like to follow the sun and I love climbing up gas flower stairs and jumping on light blue spots!

Avatar

There was a man who had been in a rocket for 900 years to a planet. One of his legs didn't work. He had a twin brother who was doing something called an avatar. Because they were twins so he could get into his avatar and it was great and he could walk and he ran out to cause lots of trouble.

Once he ventured out to a pile of mushrooms. He touched a few and they all went down to reveal the head of a hammer-head rhinoceros with a huge flower on top!

New Zealand

I went to New Zealand. It was amazing so if you want to go there, go there NOW. Some of the things you will see are forests with lots of vegetation, lots and lots of flowers and birds around the trees. The beaches are covered with lots of strange shells like Poa shells. They sparkle a lot.

The Netherlands

I went to the Netherlands. It took eight hours in the car, but when we got there it was beautiful. It was fun opening the tent but what I liked the best were the heron. PS by the way herons are a type of fishing bird,

Jellyfish

These are some jellyfish that I found on a beach in Holland called Groote Keeten. There were lots and lots of them on the beach. These are some of the most interesting jellyfish I've found because they are turquoise blue, they are enormous and they have tentacles under their globe. It always makes me think of flying saucers. When I found them I was amazed because there isn't even one in a David Attenborough movie. David Attenborough is a man that finds brilliant things, whose in movies. So, if I were going to tell you how many jellyfish I have found, I would tell you a turquoise blue big jellyfish, a Portuguese man-o-war, a squashy purple one and nothing else.


A poem

A lovely turquoise blue
Was sitting on the sea, and you
Happened to have come along.

When you spotted the jellyfish,
You wanted to make a wish.
And you wished for the jellyfish to fly,
Fly high up in the sky.
But the jellyfish moved in a lovely way.
It started floating all the day.
It floated up and by midnight
It was asleep by the moon's good light.
It slept on the moon with a lovely wisp.
In the morning it floated up high,
Higher and higher in the sky.
It met the sun, it went up high.
It met the galaxy and the stars,
It jumped and jumped
On Jupiter and Mars
The wish came true.
That happened to you.
You floated up with it.
It started going down, down, down
It went to the stars and then to the sun.
It went very low,
It hurt my tum.
It bounced off the moon and back in the puddle
It went to sleep in quite a muddle.
It's the end of my lovely poem,
Someday you might find and join.

The frog.

To make an origami frog it is very easy. Fold it diagonally and make it so that one of the sides is lower than the over then fold at the bottom.

Fantomette et la Dent du Diable

Fantomette is a spy and she has to get the baddies in prison. There are three baddies, the Prince d'Alpaga, the Furet and Bulldozer. The Furet is the leader. The most stupid is Bulldozer. All the time, Bulldozer grumbles. The second-stupidest is the Furet because his plans never work. The Prince d'Alpaga is the third-stupidest. I like the Fantomette book because Fantomette stuck Bulldozer in the telepherique. My favourite character is the Prince d'Alpaga because I like reading about him being scared of 5 m drops. The baddies always go to prison. In the book I read, the Prince d'Alpaga and the Furet were wearing yellow ski instructor's costumes and the Prince d'Alpaga said "I am never going to wear these dumb costumes again", and the Furet said "Shut up!"

The soup

Today I helped mama make almond soup. First you have to peel the almonds and then put them in the grinder with some garlic. We put too much in by mistake so we put some almond powder in. We put them in the grinder. Then we got the juice out of it.

Bees on lavender

I have found how to get a bee on my finger. To get a bee you have to have some lavender and sweaty hands. Do not force a bee or it might sting you. You shoud not be scared of a bee 'bee-cause' bees are scared of you. Pick a bit of lavender and hold it next to a bee and it might decide to come on you!


Bees tickle a bit when they are on you. When a bee is flying its wings feel like hand driers.

The stream.

I went for a walk . I ate at a stream when I had finished eating my peanut butter sandwich I went to play at the stream. I found a rock that looked like it had a seahorse skeleton on it. But it was only some bits of weed. I played fishing with my friend Julia. Julia does not like wearing trousers!

I saw a movie called Ice Age III. It was very sad because Sid the sloth fell in love with three eggs that were dinosaur eggs and then he had to leave them in dinosaur land. It was very scary because there was a huge dinosaur. I think that you should go and see it because it is very funny.

The mole

I found a dead mole. Moles are mammals and very furry ones too. Before this mole I had never seen a mole before! Moles dig tunnels so it is very hard to see one. Worms fall into the holes that moles make then the moles poison them and then they put them in a hole and then they eat them.


Moles have cupped hands for digging with.


If you see a mole you will not see its eyes because they are hidden. Moles have very tiny eyes because they do not have to see in the ground.

These are my aliens. The dog is called Mister Ricksteinsmickstenholly. The one with the green salad in its mouth is called Missus Ricksteinmickhoy. The last one is called Kiddybiddybabeerdie.
